If you have been struggling for more than a couple of months to generate any headway with creating an internet marketing business, you’ll know the REAL issues have little to do with increasing visitor count, testing and tracking, product development etc. These are what I call technology issues – and even though you obviously DO have to master them, they are not what’s really stopping you from proceeding.
No, the actual issues are concerned with:
* business purpose, goals and strategy
* planning and tactics
* being accountable
* choosing a business model plus an operating model
* business organization & information management
* personal efficiency and effectiveness
* getting the own agenda, and never allowing it to be hijacked
… and related topics.
A worthwhile concept for people establishing an internet marketing business is the idea of a Master Agenda For Internet Professionals. This is often a seven-stage process for creating a business online in a professional, principled manner. Here are the Stages of the Master Agenda:
Asserting is Stage 1 in the Master Agenda.
The intent behind this Stage is to create space (temporal & emotional) to help you to adopt the Master Agenda: you’ll want to take back – AND KEEP – power over your agenda – not somebody else’s.
The major topics listed below are:
* Email Management
* Time Management
* Purchase Management
Learning/Understanding is Stage 2 from the Master Agenda.
This Stage is about learning enough about Internet Marketing to do the Choosing Stage. This is NOT about setting up an Internet Marketing business.
I still find it a blunder to attempt to combine Learning / Understanding with the creating of an business – so be clear relating to this if you are under-going this Stage.
Visioning is Stage 3 from the Master Agenda.
You should create both a Personal as well as a Business vision, and connect them.
Specifically, you ought to:
* Create a compelling Vision for the future
* Create a vision based on how your business may help make that the reality, and:
* Define what’s and is not acceptable about your business as well as operation (that can affect what you do in Choosing)
Choosing & Defining is Stage 4 of the Master Agenda.
The objective of the Stage would be to select a Business Model with an Operating Model which will allow that you achieve your Vision.
This is a truly critical Stage which can be often totally ignored. Most often, the business design is just assumed, or people jump blindly right into a collection of business structure based on the most persuasive everlasting sales pitch they recently read.
The undeniable fact that this Stage even exists in any respect helps make the Master Agenda almost unique. (Just in case there’s any confusion – the Choosing is NOT about deciding on a niche. In some business models you WILL need to go with a niche, in others you may not. Again, that is dealing with things with a higher-level than usual.)
(A side note: This idea of considering things “at a more impressive range” is very important: from your higher-level the thing is that things inside a different way – you have a new perspective. And most importantly, you see all your options and choices. “Options and choices” is recurring theme of the Master Agenda.)
Planning is Stage 5 of the Master Agenda.
This Stage is all about identifying each of the steps you need to proceed through to put together your online marketing business. It is only NOW – once you have done your Choosing and detailed Defining that you’re really in a position to try this.
You have likely heard the phrase – “If you don’t plan, you plan to fail”.
I have my own saying in this field: “You either plan or you gamble”.
Of course, the Master Agenda is itself a high-level planning system, but this type of Planning Stage deals with the very detailed planning of the project that you simply will have Chosen and Defined in the last Stage.
Implementing is Stage 6 of the Master Agenda.
In theory, with this Stage, simply follow everything you said you’ll do throughout the Planning Stage.
But, obviously, our life is never so easy! Also, this Stage covers the special conditions of the Launch process.
This may be the final Stage before…..
Operating is Stage 7 with the Master Agenda.
In the perfect world, as soon as you launch your business, simply follow all the “Operating Processes” that you defined throughout the Planning Stage.
Yeah – right!
In reality, all hell is let loose with a stream of top-priority, urgent and critical conditions that you need to address simultaneously – many of that you had not foreseen at all.
It’s such as the stage act the location where the performer has got to keep 23 plates spinning at the same time: if you stop to breath for a moment, realize fall!
Of course, should you did your Planning and Implementing properly, it certainly won’t be quite as bad as that, but however well you intend and prepare, you ARE going to be facing multiple, critical calls on the time.
So, the top issues at this Stage are:
* Prioritising activities and
* Time management and activity management – which are second-round topics within the Asserting Stage
Finally – to some extent and other, all of us have to proceed through everything I have described above, but for the most part people don’t do that in any sort of systematic, conscious way. The result is:
* They get stuck at particular Stages – usually the Learning/Understanding stage OR
* They jump to Choosing too early, don’t go Defining, or Planning, get demoralised, and loop to another go at Choosing
* Never make significant progress in anything as they do not ever inflict Asserting
I learned pretty much everything from our experience, and possess had it confirmed from what I see inside my mentoring program. And if this all appears like a lot of trouble, enjoy it is going to take to much time – well, all I can say is “you’re wrong!”
You’ll turn out going MUCH faster in the event you take it slowly!
