If you have been struggling for more than a few months to generate any headway with establishing a web marketing business, you will know that the REAL issues haven’t much to do with increasing visitor count, testing and tracking, product etc. These are what I call technology issues – and while you obviously DO need to master them, they’re not precisely what is really holding you back.
The Seven Stages Of Setting Up A Marketing Business
No, the true issues have concerns with:
* business purpose, goals and strategy
* planning and tactics
* being accountable
* selecting a business model and an operating model
* business organization & information management
* personal efficiency and effectiveness
* taking your own agenda, and not letting it to be hijacked
… and related topics.
A very helpful concept for people setting up a world wide web marketing clients are the concept of a Master Agenda For Internet Professionals. This is really a seven-stage process for creating an online business inside a professional, principled manner. Here are the Stages from the Master Agenda:
Asserting is Stage 1 in the Master Agenda.
The purpose of this Stage is to create space (temporal & emotional) to help you to adopt the Master Agenda: you’ll want to take back – AND KEEP – control over your agenda – not another person’s.
The major topics here are:
* Email Management
* Time Management
* Purchase Management
Learning/Understanding is Stage 2 with the Master Agenda.
This Stage is around learning enough about Internet Marketing to carry out the Choosing Stage. This is NOT about creating an Internet Marketing business.
I believe it is an error to try to combine Learning / Understanding with all the starting of the business – so be clear about this if you are going through this Stage.
Visioning is Stage 3 of the Master Agenda.
You need to create both a Personal plus a Business vision, and connect them.
Specifically, you must:
* Create a compelling Vision for your future
* Create a vision for the way your organization might help make which a reality, and:
* Define precisely what is and is not acceptable about your small business and it is operation (that may affect whatever you do in Choosing)
Choosing & Defining is Stage 4 from the Master Agenda.
The objective of the Stage would be to select a Business Model as well as an Operating Model that will enable that you achieve your Vision.
This is a truly critical Stage that is usually totally ignored. Most often, the business design is merely taken for granted, or people jump blindly in to a collection of business structure depending on the most persuasive sales pitch they recently read.
The undeniable fact that this Stage even exists in any respect makes the Master Agenda almost unique. (Just in case there is any confusion – the Choosing is NOT about choosing a niche. In some business models you WILL should go with a niche, in other people you’ll not. Again, this really is managing things at a more impressive range than usual.)
(A side note: This idea of thinking about things “at a more impressive range” is very important: from the higher-level the thing is things in a very different way – you get a new perspective. And most importantly, you see all your options and choices. “Options and choices” is recurring theme in the Master Agenda.)
Planning is Stage 5 of the Master Agenda.
This Stage is all about identifying every one of the steps you have to move through to set up your internet marketing business. It is only NOW – after you have done your Choosing and detailed Defining that you will be really in the position to do this.
You have likely heard the old saying – “If you neglect to plan, you intend to fail”.
I have my own saying of this type: “You either plan otherwise you gamble”.
Of course, the Master Agenda is itself a high-level planning system, but this kind of Planning Stage deals with the very detailed planning from the project that you just will have Chosen and Defined in the previous Stage.
Implementing is Stage 6 from the Master Agenda.
In theory, in this Stage, simply follow whatever you said you’ll do during the Planning Stage.
But, obviously, life’s never so easy! Also, this Stage covers the special conditions of the Launch process.
This may be the final Stage before…..
Operating is Stage 7 in the Master Agenda.
In a great world, once you launch your small business, you simply follow all the “Operating Processes” that you just defined in the Planning Stage.
Yeah – right!
In reality, all hell is let loose using a stream of top-priority, urgent and critical issues that you’ll want to address simultaneously – many of that you simply had not foreseen in any way.
It’s much like the stage act in which the performer has got to keep 23 plates spinning simultaneously: should you pause to breath if you’ll, they start to fall!
Of course, if you did your Planning and Implementing properly, it won’t be quite as bad as that, but however well you’re planning and prepare, you ARE going to be faced with multiple, critical calls in your time.
So, the important issues at this Stage are:
* Prioritising activities and
* Time management and activity management – that happen to be second-round topics inside the Asserting Stage
Finally – rather or any other, all of us have to move through everything I have described above, as well as the most part people do not make this happen in any sort of systematic, conscious way. The result is:
* They get stuck at particular Stages – some of the Learning/Understanding stage OR
* They jump to Choosing prematurily ., don’t inflict Defining, or Planning, get demoralised, and loop to another go at Choosing
* Never make significant progress in anything because they do not ever go Asserting
I learned this all from my own experience, and possess been with them confirmed from what I see in my mentoring program. And if all of this feels like an excessive amount of trouble, like it will require too long – well, all I can think are “you’re wrong!”
You’ll turn out going MUCH faster in the event you take it slowly!
